Exhibition Het Ontwerp, Leuven

Pleasant surprise.. got a call on Thursday, if I'd like to participate in an exhibition in Leuven, for the opening of an event and design bureau, where my friend Ben Nys was exhibiting his great paintings.

So, if you are wondering why my online shop is suddenly missing half the items there's your answer, half of my shop is on display in Het Ontwerp in Leuven :-)

 

 So, first about Het Ontwerp.

Het Ontwerp is a couple that design. Steve and Cathy. Wonderful people with a vision. They do graphical, but also full events and campaigns. They get you known. And opened an office in Beautiful Leuven. And to make a visit to their office worthwhile they started exhibitions, which will change every 2 months. And make their office a really pretty place!

So who's there?
I mentioned Ben. I love Ben. And his paintings. They are amazing. Down to earth, abstract, beautiful pieces.
I'm the very proud owner of some of his works. Here's one of his latest, they are getting better and better...

Then there is Liesbeth Goorelst. Didn't know her before, now I'll remember surely. Quality leather handbags. Beautifully made, classy bags. Here's her facebook link..

Then there's Insectorama. A really unique idea. These guys made plastic cut-outs of parts of insects, which you can use to draw your own creatures, using different parts to make exiting new beasts, with the fangs of an ant, the bottom of a catterpillar, and many more parts of a really large variety of insects.
Really, you'll just have to see it, and order the set (only 7 € I think!) and start playing with it.

Countdown to Art Fair at Oognblik

It's nearly there, next friday June 22 at 20:00h the artfair will open for 3 days of Art, music & workshops.
We have been working hard, in too short a time to get things ready for you! What can you expect?
On Friday 22 there is the official opening with live music from myself. Expect quiet songs, covers I love, an eclectic mix of old Dutch and English songs. You can find some samples here.

All 3 featured artists will be around all weekend for you to talk to, discuss their works and philosophy, and you can have a glass of wine, weather forecast is good, and there is plenty of garden with table and chairs to recline on this beautiful location.

In the Oognblik arthouse there is always the permanent collection available, they have gathered very unique items over the last 11 years of organizing the Oopenblik dagen, so you can admire and be inspired by a scattering of other unique art:

Website renewed, online & looking good!

Having many skills and hobbies has its advantages and disadvantages.
Advantage is that you can combine your hobbies, and do many things yourself.
Disadvantage is that you don't know what to do first :-)

I've had my shop on Etsy for about half a year now, but some things about it bother me, like the fact that I am spending lots of time promoting Etsy, but they do not really promote me. And I love the community on Etsy, and have found many interesting artists and people on there, but there is more and more really crappy junk shops and cheap import from the east popping up, and this is not something I really want to be associated with.

So I figured to put my web building skills to work, redid my old amber site and shop, and figured I better establish myself there. No listing fees, no limits on amount of pictures, links to other sites just work, items do not expire, and Etsy does not get a cut. And I have more space to talk about amber, can highlight the true beauty, and show off my pieces also after they have been sold.

Jagna had the same idea, and got her site online also, www.jagna.be. Looking very sharp, and much better suited to get a name. Really Etsy has got us so far that we do not like to put a link on our visiting cards to Etsy anymore, it looks too cheap now. There's still great shops and artists on there (hey, we're still there!), but it is declining..
Next step is to get these great shops and artists together, and built a suitable new platform, one where there is more space for the artist, and less for the crap. Needs to brew a little more...

Now there still is the music making part to combine, another life-time love of mine.
I figured I can do the music for openings of our own exhibitions :-)
First one is planned already, Friday June 22 I will be playing on the opening of a 3 day sale of Jagna's art jewellery, my amber pieces, and paintings of our good friend Ben Nys, at whose place the whole event will take place (for which we are very grateful already).

How it started

Fair warning: if you do not want to get addicted like me maybe you should not read this...

Amber is addictive, I compare the love for amber with acquiring a taste for something, once you have it you will truly love it. A bit like Jazz, Single Malt whiskey, olives.

When I first got in contact with amber it was through Jagna, who really loves it. And I was like, huh?'
What's so special, to me it was like coloured plastic or something. So I put up with her getting some chunks which were, to me, horribly expensive. Actually she got very good deals :-)

And then we got the chunks. And I had a magnifier. And touched the damn things, and really looked at them. And was lost. Forever cursed with the amber addiction. The stones below are all ours, and not for sale. No way I'm going to part with these.

Now here's the second warning, do not open the photo's to look at the big version.

Amber is really, really nice to touch, the stones are slightly warm always, quite light, and anti electrostatic. In Greece they call Amber Elektron because of this. Each stone is unique and hold a private garden inside. Complete with leaves, animals, moss, air. Each garden is 40 million years old. Each preserved leaf and bug is also 40 million years old. Each stone has a different colour, different texture. And every single one of them is beautiful. There is large variety in colour, transparency, hue, hardness, and of course in what is inside. I love the irregularities, small cracks, bubbles and inclusions, and taking a magnifier can stare at a stone for a long time. There's whole solar systems inside!

And then there are the poor bugs, caught in the sticky raisin 40 million years ago, trapped forever, but beautifully preserved. Tiny beasts. Discovering one of these is an additional bonus. We get many of our stones raw and crusted, finding out what is underneath by carefully sanding and polishing is half the fun of the addiction. Also they will not be so damn expensive, I am selling amber for the main purpose of being able to afford to buy more. Getting the hue and structure slowly visible is the coolest, finding spiders and bugs is a wonderful surprise, a bit like winning the lottery. It's the same feeling as getting a surprise egg when you are 6 years old, and finally finding that really cool little plastic toy you wanted for months already. Boys & toys, this never changes, only the toys get more expensive.

So, this is how things started years and years ago...forever addicted now...

Monday morning mood board

Well, it finally started to freeze in Belgium.
Not good, as our little crocussus and other spring flowers in the garden decided to come and take a peek.
I should be making a black board, but have decided I need some colour input instead, and a warm colour for that.
What better as the colour of the year, which I love anyway: orange.

Sneak preview for the pop-up shop

Finally the opening of the pop-up shop is near, Jagna & me have been working very hard over the last weekend to get everything finished and ready.
Since I did not want to empty my Etsy shop I have made another line of amber jewelry to sell exclusively in the Pop-Up shop, did end up with putting some of the shop items in there, like my big raw Baltic bracelet which is just too unique to remake..
And here is a sneak preview of some of my new creations you can expect:

It also shows some of the diversity of Amber. Most people still associate amber with the clear honey/cognac colored plastic looking stuff. Which is beautiful and warm, agreed, but personally I go for the raw or yellow.
Also the very dark is stunning, and I find a bit harder to find than the honey/cognac.
Anyway, in the end I love it all, to touch, feel & play around with.
